Stop distracting yourself from what matters

Distractions are everywhere these days.

I have four other tabs open as I’m writing this. And I’m listening to a song that reminds me of a favorite TV show, so I keep wanting to get up and dance around and think about how cool the show is. It’s affecting the quality of this post.

Hang on, let me close those tabs. And turn off the music.

There.

Now I’m here with you. All of that other stuff will still be there when I’m finished writing this.

Marcus Aurelius said:

“Throw away thy books, no longer distract thyself: it is not allowed.”

And:

“Think steadily every moment, like a man—like a Roman—and focus on your work with perfect and simple dignity. This way, you’ll give yourself relief from all other thoughts. And you WILL give yourself relief, if you do everything as if it were the last thing you’ll ever do.”

Focusing your attention is an intentional act. That’s always been true, but it’s never been more glaringly apparent than in the information age. As a marketing copywriter online, I know how many sources are shouting at you to Look over here! I’m one of those sources.

The art of focusing your attention is a practice, like meditation.

It takes a willingness to determine what you’re going to let into your field of awareness, what you’re going to direct your energy toward. And then it takes the diligence to actually stick by your determination.

Marcus Aurelius considered it essential to avoid distractions, because what you pay attention to shapes:

  • The quality of your moments
  • The quality of your mind
  • The quality of what your work
  • The quality of your relationships
  • The quality of your overall happiness in life

That list could be a lot longer. Feel free to add to it.

Today, focus on what you’re doing with simple dignity. Do one thing at a time, and pay attention to your work.

After all, none of us are guaranteed so much as another hour in life. This could be the last thing you ever do.

Do it well.
